Sally Bartlett

All 12 months have birthday flowers associated with them. Perhaps knowing some unusual facts, legends, myths and trivia will either change your mind or give you inspiration about purchasing.

January (Carnation)
Red if you are seeking approval; purple can mean unpredictable; pink is the symbol for Mothers Day; and white can mean pure love. Luckily, carnations can be dyed any color!

February (Iris or Violet)
Generally, it means good luck, and some unusual facts are that they believe the flower on the Sphinx in Egypt is an iris and the French symbol the "fleur-de-lis" is designed from an iris.

March (Jonquil or Daffodil)
"Have pity on my passion" is a suggested meaning, and in England the jonquil is known as the "Lent Lily" as it blooms during lent.

April (Daisy)
Associated with saying goodbye. A good break-up bouquet, perhaps?

May (Lily of the Valley)
Sometimes called "fairy ladders" or "ladders to heaven", it is rumored to be made from Eve's tears as she was evicted from the Garden of Eden.

June (Rose)
Common knowledge for these birthday flowers is red for true love, yellow for dying love or infidelity and pink for friendship. Less common information is that blue roses stand for mystery and green for calm.

July (Larkspur)
Denoting open heart and return of happiness. It is very poisonous to livestock.

August (Gladiolus)
It looks like swords, named for the gladiator and appropriately means "you pierce my heart".

September (Aster)
The flower of elegance and daintiness. "Aster” is the Latin word for "star".

October (Marigold)
Meaning "you are my destiny." In India, the flowers are placed around the necks of holy statues. It is also believed that the petals can help relieve bee stings.

November (Chrysanthemum)
This flower has been grown in China for over 2000 years and they use the flower in treating high blood pressure and angina.

December (Narcissus)
Associated with the Greek Mythology claim that it is the essence of a vain young man, Narcissus, who fell in love with his own reflection in the water. Of all birthday flowers, these have the least complimentary meaning: egotism and conceit!
