Wild tulips still grow in the virgin steppes of central Asia. They appeared in Holland only in the 17th century. At that time tulips were very expensive there and one beautiful tulip might cost same as gold and diamond jewelry.
The high price of tulips was supported by tulip mania in Europe.Tulips were a favorite gift for rich and noble men and women. It is known, that Louis XIV of France gave a unique tulip gift to his lover. Tulip had gray-violet color and cost 5 years of florist work and 5, 000 French livres (1 livre = 1 pound of silver).
As known, the production of new sorts may take several decades and is done by artificial pollination of one flower by other. Known a story when a reach banker purchased a bulb of innovative beautiful tulip, which was just created by florist for 50 000 florins after several year of hard work. Immediately after the deal, banker damaged the only bulb of tulip by his boot. That strange situation was explained because the banker had his own collection of tulips and didn`t want any competition.
Strange stories and machinations surrounded beautiful tulip flowers and were at times tragic and funny. People lost all their money and good faces because of one bulb of tulip. Gorgeous but common now flower was a midpoint of people`s interests, secrets and even crimes.
Forgotten language of flowers actively used tulips. It`s interesting that tulip may mean a secret message, which easier to say by flowers, than by words. The tulip symbolizes a compliment about being an excellent lover.
